Pictures were made to INSPIRE, RECORD and to REMINISCE  the old times and memories after  long … long years  and decades of our sweet journey. It help us to recall every inch of our lives especially the memoirs from the past.

If we will grasp Photography as our lifestyle, we’ll get much more delighted out of our days. We’ll be able to value the texture and color in us. We will witness the radiance and umbra in the streets.

Suddenly, we will be much more conscious on  the surroundings and live a full of life because of  it. And I conclude, it is heart, why people desire to learn more from their photography experience. This to me is the paramount favor that photography bring to humanity.

Photography  isn’t your lens or your camera. Those are only tools to capture light and convert it into inevitable form. Yes! Some of  them are pretty impressive, but it’s not  what gives photography the capability to get amazing shots. The thing that you shall appreciate, is that photography is all concerning on how you view the world. It regards on dealing on what you desire to utter; regardless the subject motive. It’s about facing at the world and actually glancing on it.

Director Dominic Meily (or “Sir Doms” to us), introduced me to his passion – photography. More importantly, he enticed me to set my objectives. He is a person whom I found very creative and productive in his own way. A person who uplifts my mind and one who never fails to encourage us that..

“YOUR SHOTS DO NOT DEPEND ON THE DEVICE OR CAMERA YOU’LL BE USING. IT DEPENDS ON YOUR OWN STYLE AND BEING AN ARTIST IN OUR OWN WAY, OF COURSE WITH GOD’S GUIDANCE.”

Director Dominic Meily is a Filipino TV Creative Director and also a Street Photographer. He took up animation and film-making at the Mowelfund Film Institute. He works with Mr. Daniel Razon (Public Servant, Media Practitioner, and CEO of UNTV37), who helped him develop his directorial and graphic design skills when he began his career at UNTV37 in 2002. Aside from being a Director, he is also the President of Photoville International, an organization of photographers with members all over the world.

Being his student in Photography and TV Production, I became very interested on his field. I was eager to ask him about his dreams, inspirations and how he developed his skills. He told me, which he wanted to tell every interested student out there, that:

“PHOTOGRAPHY for me is a PASSION.

It is how I express myself. It allows me to show people the beauty out of the ordinary. I personally love to capture the “slice of life.” Life as it happens. I love that I can document the simple and the great moments going on around me. At a very young age, I always dream of becoming an artist. The problem is that I do not really know what kind of artist I wanted to be. It seems like I wanted to try everything. But I always remember being captivated by the photos I saw in magazines, and spent hours in magazine stores not reading the contexts but looking at the great photos. I even love collecting different kinds of magazines just for the photos. Because of this, I have always wanted to have my own camera. But back then, it was so difficult for me to have it, I needed to work hard just to get one. As time passed, my wife gave me my first camera (Sony F828) as a gift. It did not matter that I did not fully understand the camera or the kind of photography I wanted to do. All I know is that “I have the opportunity to capture my thoughts and show the world was I see through my eyes.” Later on, I had this great opportunity to work with Mr. Daniel Razon, my boss and my mentor in UNTV 37 who gave me my first DSLR.

I was inspired by him that I got attached into serious photography. There are a lot of photographers that I admire and they inspire me to take photos, but my favourite are the “street photographers.” To name a few: Garry Winogrand, Vivian Maier, Robert Frank, Elliott Erwitt, and Steve McCurry. In my opinion, this area of photography is the hardest and most creative. My photos may not be impressive for other people today, I may not get rich with my photos. But I believe, 20-30 years later, maybe my photos will be valuable and may become important to many especially to my fellow Filipinos, just like how important and amazing it is to us to see photos from 20-30 years ago.

I never bought my own camera. All the cameras I have now are gifts. I have learned photography without spending any money. I have been blessed so much that with God’s help, I wanted to teach and share my talent also for free. I have been teaching photography for about 4 years now and am very happy doing it. I want people to remember me as a street photographer who loves to share his knowledge.
